Pergamon - 2021
Acrylic on canvas
25 x 35 cm
Photography: Alma Ben David
I painted this scene from memory. It is of a party I helped set up and theme. The club is named Pergamon. Unlike the majority of my paintings, this work features several people and a more subtle palette. The subject in the painting is a dialogue of two people in the middle of the dance floor. There are two additional characters - Me (bottom right) and another man in the background on the left. I painted this work with barely any paint left and with frustration with my practice at the time. This gives the work a rough, gritty look.
"There are many things on which I rely on instinct. Actually, when I think about colour I think about it as a form of drawing. That is, I think this is coming forward, this is making a connection, this is establishing an echo somewhere" - Frank Auerbach, 2007
